This is a copy of letter I sent to my three congresmen today about Israel and the new policies:

I am so disappointed in President's Obama speech yesterday, May 19, 2011, regarding this administration's policy toward the Middle East/Arab world. He has drastically changed the relationship of the USA toward Israel, our only ally in the area that is a true democracy. Historically the people of the USA have supported Israel and we need to continue to support her.

It is a contradiction of reality to say “Israel deserves defensible borders” but then insist the borders be those of 1967, IE, pre-Six Day War. I am old enough to remember the shelling the Israelis received from the gun positions on the Golan Heights. How on earth can Israel give up that strategic location and still be able to defend itself?

“Israel has a right to exist” was in the speech, as I recall. Why not reinforce that sentiment with some “tough love” to the Arab world? If an Arab people group advocates destruction of Israel then that group should not receive any foreign aid from the USA. Continuing to send aid to such a group reveals another contradiction between what the President says and what he does.

In addition, I am concerned that the 1967 border positions mean that Jerusalem is under Islamic/Arab control. That the President of the United States advocates that situation is unbelievable. Only when Jerusalem has been under Israeli control has it actually been accessible to ALL the religions of the world. In so many other forums our President presents himself as a “citizen of the world”. Why does he not advocate that in this situation? Another contradiction.

When the Israeli Prime Minister addresses Congress next Monday I sincerely hope you make him welcome. I hope you let him know that at least this citizen, and I suspect many other citizens, do not agree with what President Obama stated today. In fact, if there is a “Resolution in Support of Israel” I sincerely hope that you are among its supporters.
